Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show on Feb. 9, 2025, a first for a solo rapper, was a powerful display of storytelling and symbolism, tackling themes of American identity, racial disparity, and the "dream deferred" through visuals and lyrics. / Photograph by Kevin Sabitus / Getty via The New Yorker. On Dec. 2, 2024, a team of seventy-seven activists set up a protest art installation—titled "Breaking Point: Untold Stories of Climate Loss and Damage"—around Shell’s London headquarters. The 'exhibition' displayed the once-cherished belongings of Filipino communities that wrecked by climate-charged typhoons that have struck the Philippines. Greenpeace volunteers placed the water- and memorabilia-filled cases and then shattered the glass cases. Photo © Chris J. Ratcliffe, Greenpeace.
The Knitting Nannas are a group of older women who use knitting as a form of creative protest against "unconventional gas mining, other forms of non-sustainable energy and nasty rapacious greed." Their approach is non-violent and inclusive, making it accessible for older women and others who may not be able to participate in traditional protests. They sit, knit, and have tea while bearing witness to environmental destruction. They create hats, scarves, flags, and other items to symbolize their cause and strengthen their community.
