Brasília

Oscar Niemeyer (architect) and Lúcio Costa (architect and urban planner) designed Brasília to symbolize a break from colonial history and regional inequalities. Inaugurated as Brazil’s capital in 1960 after four years of design and construction, Brasília’s futuristic design and central location challenged traditional power centralization in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Its radial urban plan created distinct zones aimed at promoting equality.
