The idea of telling the truth in public is at the root of protesting

Not everyone knows what to do with a blank canvas. That’s why we value artists and creatives.

Artists can envision something when they look at a blank sheet of paper, a piece of wood, even a soulless urban corridor.

The same is true with poster board. Especially when it comes to protests.

A sign of the times

In its series, “The History and Art of Protest Posters,” PBS SoCal states, “The history of protest posters dates to the 16th century when Martin Luther and members of the Protestant Reformation posted Luther’s 95 Theses on the church doors. The message communicated discontent and ultimately provoked a split within the religion.”

Right now, Americans are protesting.

For Create to Liberate on April 19 you might be protesting in person. Your presence is important. Equally liberating is the message you create and communicate when you give us a sign.

“When I think about protest, I worry so much that people think about it only as standing in the streets. And I say that as someone who has been standing in the streets of cities across the country – but at the root of it is this idea of telling the truth in public.”

DeRay McKesson, American civil rights activist

“While the internet and social media allow for a great number of voices and perspectives to be heard, there is still an important place for the protest poster in the 21st century,” continues PBS SoCal.

“The emotion that is embedded within protest posters is essential as these marks and symbols carry this passion onward far after the creative process to make stronger and more sustainable communities for everyone.”

As you stand up for creative expression and stand for artists in America, it seems natural for you to express your imagination visually and eloquently.

  • Creativity is our power and our truth.
  • Creativity rejects totalitarianism and deceit.

Give us a sign of your creativity on April 19.

“There may be a time when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

Elie Wiesel

We invite individual visual and performing artists, writers, bookstores, book clubs, brave non-profit or government organizations and other individuals or groups across the USA to independently “flood the zone” with creativity, for Create to Liberate, Saturday, April 19, 2025.

Think of the idea above as a pilot light for the creative fire within you (if yours needs to be lit.)
