That machine kills fascists
We invite individual visual and performing artists, writers, bookstores, book clubs, brave non-profit or government organizations and other individuals or groups across the USA to independently “flood the zone” with creativity, for Create to Liberate, Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Think of the following idea as a pilot light for the creative fire within you (if yours needs to be lit.)
Create to Liberate Idea No. 16
The recent Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” reminded us of the message plastered on the guitar of the great American folk singer Woody Guthrie: “This machine kills fascists.”
You may have a guitar
If you have guitar, April 19 would be a good day to take it out and play in public. Even if you’re a bit rusty … or new to the instrument.
You might even slap a “This machine kills fascists” sticker on the face of your guitar.
If you do own an acoustic or electric guitar, odds are you first embraced a guitar in either the 1960s or the early 2020s. Those periods of time are when guitar sales boomed in America.
- The 1960s experienced a surge in guitar popularity, driven by the folk music movement and the rise of rock and roll. The largest musical instrument manufacturer in the U.S., produced about ten million guitars between 1945 and 1975, peaking in 1964–1965 with sales of 350,000 instruments.
- Increased interest in music-related leisure activities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, gets credit for recent guitar sales growth as people sought new hobbies and creative outlets.
- By 2021, electric guitars overtook acoustic guitars in sales growth. Fender, one of the largest guitar manufacturers, reported that 2021 was its best sales year of all time, with electric guitars driving much of the growth.
It would be sweet to see people in their 70s playing guitar with those in their 20s and 30s.
“Hey, grandad. During Create to Liberate on April 19, grab your Gibson. I’ve got my Martin. Let’s go to a street corner or park bench and pick out a few tunes. You show me some Dylan or Baez, I’ll show you some Rage Against the Machine.”
“Let’s kill a few fascists.”
