Organize a pop-up reading with banned children’s books
We invite individual visual and performing artists, writers, bookstores, book clubs, brave non-profit or government organizations and other individuals or groups across the USA to independently “flood the zone” with creativity, for Create to Liberate, Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Think of the following idea as a pilot light for the creative fire within you (if yours needs to be lit.)
Create to Liberate Idea No. 13
We like the idea of holding pop-up children’s book readings in public spaces on Saturday, April 19 as an act of art activism.
Here are promising locations:
- Park or playground
- Library
- Bookstore
- Community center
- Museum or Science Center
- Zoo or Aquarium
- Recreation centers or sports fields
- Amusement parks
- Mall and shopping centers
- Religious institutions
- Hospitals and pediatric clinics
This is the way
Then we discovered how the formidable Austin Public Library and Book People, Texas’ largest independent bookstore, have already compiled the perfect reading list of books for these pop-up events.
Some books in their “Banned Camp” collection may come as a surprise to you but all have been prohibited or challenged in some United States location.
All would be great to read to kids as an act of art activism on April 19, 2025.
Open a book and you open a mind.
