The Death of Marat, David

What is Political Assassination?

Art doesn’t settle the question. It keeps it alive, forcing each generation to decide whether a killing is private violence, or a wound to the body politic.

The Martyrdom Ploy

Artists across centuries have been fascinated by the psychological sleight of hand of strategic martyrdom. How have artists depicted characters that deflect any examination of their own role in creating the chaos?

Pull up a chair.
Or a torch.

Visual, performing, literary and other artists have long been powerful voices for social change, political commentary and dissent.

Our world is facing a rise of sociopolitical challenges not witnessed since the 1930s. Fortunately, the arts provide a powerful platform for resistance.

Abbetuck encourages artists to create works that inspire compassion and promote freedom.

We will showcase creatives in all disciplines who have used‒and are using‒their art forms to:

  • speak out against injustice.
  • challenge the status quo.
  • strengthen democracy.

Let’s build a community of visual, performing and literary artists who are connected by their ability to be visionary.

Arts Activism Thrives on Solidarity

Authoritarianism feeds on isolation. Your art makes sure no one stands alone.

You’re projecting…

During the U.S. President’s visit to the UK, the political campaign group Led By Donkeys projected images of Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein onto a tower while playing audio that questioned the relationship between the two men.

This form of protest represents arts activism.
